SAUGANASH MEMORIAL GARDEN

Two years ago, 10 Sauganash Garden Club members took it upon themselves to beautify the area near the underpass at Kostner and Granville, trimming bushes, planting annuals and perennials, and doing much weeding. A committee was also set up to water this area using water from the two houses on either side of this garden.

The club has received much praise for this undertaking from residents of Sauganash and Sauganash Park since it is much use school and church.  Many problems still exist in this area, namely the drinking that goes on in the evening. Broken glass from beer bottles, pop cans and paper litter are constantly being cleaned up.  We do not have to look at pictures in the newspapers at Cook County Forest Preserves this mess - we have it in our own community.  These are our children destroying the beauty of our neighborhood.

We have spent over $1,000 in this garden and placed a Memorial Plaque on the fence.  Solar lights were put in the garden last year, only to have them removed and smashed.   The decorative pineapples, which were laid into concrete were also almost stolen.  We need everyone living near Kostner Forest Glen, and Lowell to their eyes call the police.  We also urge parents to talk to their children pride in the community.  We are looking to take an active part in the up-keep of the Memorial Garden.  Can you find 1/2 hour to the underpass of Ieaves and debris, or pick up dead branches after a storm?  If we don't take care of it, it might revert to what it once was.

Thank you to those who have donated flowers or made monetary contributions. Paying a landscaper to cut the lawn is  expensive - can anyone help us with this?  Please call Chris Kunz, at 685-0051 if you would like to help in any way.  We are also urging 8th grade students Iooking for service hours to help, as well as Girl Scouts and Boy Scouts.
